This is a theoretical project that addresses foundational aspects of quantum information processing with a focus on structural features of qudit systems. While much effort has been spent on investigating quantum state spaces, relatively little is known about the structure of quantum observables. The mathematical duality of states and observables provides a guarantee that whatever one learns about one side is relevant for the other, so that it is to be expected that studying structures of quantum observables will provide a new angle and open up new questions.

In our new group at the University of Siegen (Germany) we are looking for a motivated
PhD student in the field of quantum information theory. The research topics include:

* theory of multiparticle entanglement,
* entanglement measures,
* foundations of quantum mechanics, e.g. the Kochen-Specker theorem

Applicants are expected to have a master / diploma in physics, experience in theoretical
physics and interest in foundational questions of quantum mechanics.

A PhD position is open in the atom optics group in Hamburg, Germany for studying the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical high finesse (> 500.000) cavity operating in the regime of resolved recoil sidebands. See details on [http://photon.physnet.uni-hamburg.de/en/ilp/footer/news-detail/open-phd-... our group homepage]

Applications are sought for a PhD studentship in condensed matter theory funded by the SEPnet collaboration. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. J. Quintanilla at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). There will be opportunities to collaborate with experimentalists working on these subjects at RAL’s ISIS neutron and muon source and with other theorists in the SEPnet collaboration.
