This PhD project is aimed at developing highly sensitive methods for detection of magnetic fields with optically pumped magnetometers. The magnetometer will be based on laser-interrogation of room-temperature cesium atomic vapor. Quantum techniques such as spin-squeezing can be used for improving the magnetic field sensitivity. The project may include work on designing a prototype magnetometer. Possible applications of this magnetometer include measuring bio-magnetic signals from the heart or brain.

A staff or graduate student (Ph.D.) position is available at UCLA to design a chip scale spin photon memory interface with long coherence times (full descr. below). Degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in physics or related field, and a strong background in experimental physics or engineering is required.
