PhD positions in classical simulation and error correction (QuTech, the Netherlands)

Application deadline:

Sunday, June 15, 2025

Job type:

Two PhD positions are available at QuTech and Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands.

The candidates will be among the first members of a new group, led by Tim Coopmans, which will focus on the development of computational tools (algorithms, software, mathematics) for dealing with errors and other imperfections in quantum computers and quantum networks.

PhD position: Classical simulation of noisy quantum circuits

The goal of this PhD position is to develop and apply fast simulation algorithms for noisy quantum circuits, building upon existing work, and applications of such simulations, such as error mitigation. The project will start out with investigating the potential of decision diagrams, a data structure from classical computer science that has been successfully applied to quantum circuits, and later venture out to other approaches if needed.

Deadline: 15 June

PhD position: Automating the search for quantum error correction

This PhD’s aim is to develop algorithms to find (stabilizer) quantum error correction codes for small hardware with limited connectivity. We will first consider constraint solvers for this task and potentially try out other approaches from the “formal methods” community in classical computer science.
