We are searching for a talented and motivated PhD student who is interested in experimental quantum optics and quantum information with trapped ions. The research will focus on the investigation of trapped strontium Rydberg ions.

Trapped Rydberg ions are a novel system for quantum technologies. By laser light, the ions’ outermost electrons are excited to high-lying orbitals. Such Rydberg ions are million times bigger than ions in the ground state, and due to their size, they obtain very peculiar properties.

Trapped Rydberg ions are a novel quantum system. By laser light, the outermost electron of trapped ions is excited to high-lying orbitals. Such Rydberg ions are million times bigger than ions in the ground state, and due to their size, they obtain very peculiar properties. For instance, they have very large transition dipole moments thus become very sensitive to microwave fields.

We deal with precision spectroscopy of trapped and laser-cooled atomic and molecular ions. For this purpose, we develop novel technologies for the coherent manipulation of individual ions and their spectroscopy.
To support our team, we are looking for 3 candidates for a PhD degree to join us in the three different projects described below. The salary will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85%).

The QUEST Institute for Experimental Quantum Metrology is a joint institution of Leibniz Universität Hannover and PTB Braunschweig, the German National Metrology Institute. The institute was founded within the scope of the Excellence Cluster "QUEST" ("Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research") on PTB's campus.

Quinfog is an emerging group on Quantum Information and Foundations of Quantum Mechanics based at the Instituto de Fisica Fundamental in the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). It currently includes three staff members from CSIC, plus a similar number of PhD students and affiliated members from other institutions. Our research focuses on four areas: Quantum Technologies, Relativistic Quantum Information, Quantum Correlations and Quantum Simulation.
